When it comes to statistical methodology, SAS and R analytical tools are the most commonly discussed tools in the industry. R is an open source tool that is free to use, and because of that, it is the most common tool taught in schools. SAS is an analytical tool that comes at a cost and therefore is not commonly taught in schools. There are pros and cons to each tool, but are they an either-or option, or would both tools be better used together?
“We see using SAS and R internally, or for observation purposes, is a good decision. Where one is weak, the other is strong, and therefore compliment each other quite well.” – Irina Kotenko, Project/Technical Manager for Clinical SAS
In 2013 Chelsea Loomis Lofland, from the University of California and Rebecca Ottesen from California Polytechnic State University wrote a paper, “The SAS Versus R Debate in Industry and Academia”.
In the paper, they discussed the pros and cons of both tools in the following areas:
The pros and cons proved both need to co-exist and that the winning solution for all is to use both technologies to leverage data manipulation and analysis.
In some circumstance, there may not be an option to use both. Depending on the data you are working with, such as in clinical trials, you may be required to use a tool that is validated. In this case, SAS would stand out on top. However, in the last 5 years, R is mentioned more and more in clinical analysis.
Most companies will make their decision around one key area: Money. As mentioned earlier, SAS comes at a cost, but with it you gain excellent support and a validated tool. R is available as a free open source tool, but is anything really free? Watch this fun video discussing SAS and R and see why Free might not mean Free
